Worship

You're Welcome Here!

In the name of Jesus Christ, we welcome you! St. Philip’s is a community of disciples: we have received Jesus as our Savior, and we are learning, by His Spirit, how to follow Him as Lord. Each member of this fellowship, pastor and layman alike, is a work in progress, and we invite you to come and be part of the lifelong adventure of pursuing God’s purpose for your life and ministry in the world.

Where To Find Us

St. Philip's is located on Church St. in downtown Charleston, SC.

What To Expect

First-time visitors can expect reverent worship, biblical teaching, and a warm welcome into our church family. We hope the information below will be helpful for planning your visit. If you have any other questions, please feel free to give us a call at (843) 722-7734.

Free parking is available for all worship services in both our parking lot on the corner of Cumberland and Church Streets and in the parking garage directly across Cumberland Street from the lot. Please note that you will be required to pay if you opt to keep your car in the lot or garage beyond the length of the service (for lunch, errands, etc.). When exiting the parking garage after a worship service, the gate will sometimes be left open; if it is not, you may speak to an attendant or press the “help” button on the ticket box by the gate and explain that you have attended a service at St. Philip’s.

Since Church Street is one-way on our block, you may find it easiest to use 79 Cumberland Street, the address that will bring you closest to our parking lot, when using Apple Maps or Google Maps to drive to church.

Residential and/or metered street parking is available on all surrounding streets, including Church, Cumberland, State, and Queen Streets.
While the City of Charleston is usually lenient on Sunday mornings with the one-hour time limit in the residential parking areas around St. Philip’s, please note that you will receive a ticket if you park in an illegal spot. Be mindful of yellow lines (especially next to driveways), fire hydrants, yellow-painted curbs, etc.

During the school year (mid-September through mid-May), we offer Sunday school for children ages 0-18 beginning at 9:15 a.m. Adult offerings begin 15 minutes later to allow ample time for drop-off. Nursery (ages 0–3) and children's church (ages four through third grade) are available during the 10:30 service year round. We are currently also offering a nursery during the 8:15 service. Learn more here about children's Sunday morning offerings here.

We also offer an infant feeding/respite room equipped with a rocking chair and changing table for use during the 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. services. Our greeters will be happy to assist you in finding our nursery, children’s church, or Respite Room.

Our 8:15 a.m. service could best described as quiet and contemplative. It is a said service of Holy Eucharist, meaning there is no music, and the liturgy uses traditional language (e.g. "thy," "thee").

Our 10:30 a.m. service, accompanied by the St. Philip's Parish Choir, is majestic and vibrant, drawing upon the rich tradition of both English and American hymnody.

In both services, the Bible is foundational for the preacher’s weekly sermon as well as the liturgy, and the words of Scripture ring clearly throughout the service in the prayers that shape our worship of God.

Our Wednesday evening service is a "come-as-you-are" communion service with contemporary music and language.

Our Sunday congregation is made up of a mix of people—longtime St. Philippians, newcomers, local visitors, and tourists—and you will likely see a range of attire. While you may notice that many men tend to wear slacks and button-down shirts (and often jackets and ties) and many women wear dresses, there is not a dress code, and you are invited to wear whatever you are most comfortable in.

Our Wednesday service is more casual, so while you may still see some folks dressed in their "Sunday best," most others are coming straight from school, practice, or some kind of activity—you will definitely see plenty of T-shirts and shorts.

Please note: Services are currently being held in the St. Philip's Academy building (corner of Cumberland and State Streets) due to construction on the sanctuary.
Construction notice:
The graveyard and sanctuary are closed to weekday visitors due to construction and renovations taking place as part of our Shine the Light capital campaign.
