Music Ministry

Sing Praises Unto His Name!

Music is an integral piece of our principal Sunday worship service (10:30 a.m.). The music team carefully selects hymns and choral anthems that reinforce the messages of the Scripture readings and the sermon.

All who enjoy singing (ages three through adult) or are looking to learn more about music are encouraged to join one of our choirs!

The St. Philip's Parish Choir

Adults and Teens | Directed by Chris Walchesky

The St. Philip's Parish Choir is a multi-generational auditioned choir of some 30-35 staff and volunteer singers. The St. Philip's Choir leads music at the 10:30 a.m. service each Sunday and at every high feast of the church. Evensong is also offered several times a year. This choir rehearses Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. September through May. We invite all who are interested in joining the choir to contact Chris Walchesky at (854) 429-1946 or email him to arrange for a simple audition.

The Resurrection Choir leads hymns at parish funerals. All who enjoy singing hymns are encouraged to join us. Contact Chris Walchesky to be added to the email list, and please join us as your schedule allows. There are no rehearsals for this choir. Your presence will be a tremendous blessing to families.

The Wednesday band leads the music each week at the 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays Alive! service. This ensemble includes singers and instrumentalists and primarily focuses on musical genres that aren't part of the regular flavor of Sunday mornings at St. Philip's, including modern hymnody, black gospel, and even country styles.  Weekly rehearsals are held prior to the service. If you would like to learn more about the band, please email Chris.

Children's Choirs

Ages 3–18 | Directed by Zippy Hood

Our children's choirs rehearse weekly on Wednesdays (K3–3rd grade) and Thursdays (grades 4–12) during the school year and sing a minimum of six services between October and May. All are welcome to join whether they are brand-new or seasoned singers! Our youngest singers practice music readiness and learning to move to music in a Christian environment, while our older singers build on those fundamentals and learn to harmonize and blend their voices in a choir setting.

Our Choral Evensong Service

At 4:00 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month (October through May), St. Philip's offers a service of Choral Evensong, a time of contemplative worship, psalmody, and prayer. Please join us!

A note about Evensong from the Rev. Brian McGreevy:
The term “Evensong” is derived from the Old English ǣfensang, originally applied to the pre-Reformation service of Vespers during the Middle Ages. Thomas Cranmer’s 1549 Book of Common Prayer combined elements of the old monastic services of Vespers and Compline into a unique English-language service focused on the wonder of Christ’s Incarnation, built around the two great Canticles from Luke’s Gospel, the Magnificat and the Nunc Dimittis, supplemented with psalmody and Scripture. Contemplative in tone, the liturgy for this service has remained essentially unchanged for some 500 years, and connects us to the countless host of saints who have gone before, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Commencing with the confession of sin, followed immediately by the sung prayer “O Lord, open Thou our lips,” we affirm that the gifts of speech and of song come from God alone and that we are created to sing His praise. May the words and music sung by the choir become a prayer within us and lift us to contemplate God’s beauty and glory as we worship Jesus, the Light of the world.

Meet Our Team

Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
—Ephesians 5:19–21

My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.

I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music.
